It is both a profound responsibility and a great source of inspiration to lead such a distinguished community of professionals in the field of audiology. A technical issue linked with the processing of SYNOP data at ECMWF has impacted the quality of the SYNOP layer shown on EFAS. This does not have any impact on the EFAS service which does not use the data stream used in the SYNOP layer. This will comprise evidence-based practice and technical tips including videos of surgical techniques. It seems we attempted to describe soil depth as a grib parameter (as it is used in multiple in-house applications) on this documentation page.

It is a structured framework that allows companies to identify and prioritize key external factors that may impact their business. The EFAS Matrix typically includes factors such as economic conditions, market trends, regulatory changes, and competitive pressures. The aim of EFAS is to support preparatory measures before major flood events strike, particularly in the large trans-national river basins and throughout Europe in general. EFAS is the first operational European system monitoring and forecasting floods across Europe, and is a component of the  Copernicus Emergency Management Service.

To address this limitation, organizations may need to complement the EFAS Matrix with other tools that focus on internal factors, such as the SWOT Analysis. The European Flood Awareness Systems (EFAS) is the first operational pan-European flood forecasting and monitoring system. EFAS provides a wide range of early flood forecasting information to support national and regional authorities with flood risk management duties in arranging preparatory measures before an event strikes. In addition, EFAS provides a unique overview across Europe and neighbouring countries on currently observed and forecasted flood events.

GFM data can be accessed via the EFAS or GloFAS map viewer or using the GFM data portal. Supervised by the experienced EFAS faculty, participants of the courses will practice their techniques on cadavers. If you are a foot and ankle surgeon residing and working in a European country where there is an EFAS-affiliated National Society, you can automatically become an EFAS member by joining this national society. Once your national membership is approved, the secretary of the society will report your profile to EFAS, activating your EFAS Affiliated National Society Membership. Such a working group shall have an appointed convener and a well defined mandate, and shall report results to the General Assembly. ELECTIONS, NOMINATIONSA search committee of three people, appointed by the General Assembly, shall call for nominations to the offices of Vice Chairperson, Secretary-General and Treasurer of the Board, and two auditors, and draw up a list of nominees.

But when I upload the netCDF file in Python using xarray and actually check it, the soil depth for layer 1 goes till 50 meters, and the soil depth for layer 2 goes till 1400 m (1.4 km !!!). This does not seem realistic, as I have never seen a hydrological model or a land surface model working with these high depths of soil, unless the focus is on the deep layers. The EFAS Matrix and SWOT Analysis are both strategic planning tools used to assess a company’s internal and external environment.

EFAS 4.2 mainly concerns the addition of new hydrological river discharge stations in relevant layers, wtih additional improvements and general bug fixes. EFAS v5.2 introduces several minor changes to the system, including; Revised Notification criteria for Formal and Informal notifications, updates to station metadata, updated flood protection levels and major rivers layers, and updated documentation on FTP access. The Scientific Committee is looking for experienced orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons committed to teaching and education to join the 8-member-Scientific-Committee team. We hold 2 online work meetings and 1 face-to-face meeting every year, where we work on the drafts to build EFAS meetings with the highest standards in orthopaedic education and training. If you are an orthopaedic surgeon in training, or health practionare or scientist dedicated to advancement of foot and ankle knowledge you may select this membership type for application.

EFAS Council and the Certification Board have agreed that it would be appropriate to consider awarding an Honorary Certificate to European Foot and Ankle Surgeons of merit. This shall be drawn from the previous list of Executive and Council Members who were democratically elected and who have been active in EFAS and its committees. Once a candidate has been accepted for examination the following process will occur, preceding the biennial meeting or advanced instructional course.

The minimum time period is three months but this may include training for shorter periods in several centres. EFAS currently has Basic Instructional Courses, Cadaver Courses, and an Annual Meeting or Advanced Instructional Course each year. Ideally the candidate shall have attended each of these courses but variations may be acceptable and the final decision about proceeding to sit the examination shall be determined by the Examination Board.

The list of nominees shall be presented to the Voting and Non-Voting Representatives of all members at least one month prior to the General Assembly for election every odd year. In addition to the names prepared by the search committee, the final ballot can include names which have been agreed upon by the representatives of at least three member national societies. Proposals received at the EFAS Secretary-General will be mailed to all representatives. Email voting by non-attending Voting Representatives or written transfer of voting rights to a Non-Voting Representative is allowed. Email votes should be received at the EFAS Secretary-General 24h before the GA. When votes are tied, the Board members will make the final decision during the General Assembly.

Products

Foot and ankle surgery is the sub-specialty of orthopaedic surgery which deals with the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of disorders of the foot and ankle. Specialist foot and ankle surgeons are likely to have undergone surgical training, specialty training in orthopaedics and an additional fellowship in foot and ankle surgery. The GFM product is designed to deliver, in near real-time, critical information on ongoing floods events to users worldwide, including national authorities, emergency units, research centres, decision-makers and other stakeholders.

However, there shall be no limit to the number of times that a Candidate may present for examination. Evidence of at least two international publications in appropriate Journals on Foot and Ankle Surgical topics shall be required. Preference shall be given to those publishing in the Journal of the European Foot and Ankle Society. GloFAS variables (called ‘parameters’ in ECMWF MARS) are the hydrological entities calculated by the modelling chain.

Each topic starts https://www.efas2023.org/forum/ with a short theorical presentation, followed by a demonstration from the faculty and ends with 40 minutes of practical work on foot foot by participants. This type of membership is for individual European orthopaedic and trauma surgeons with strong interest in foot and ankle surgery residing in a country where there is no EFAS-affiliated National Society. The applying individual must demonstrate commitment to foot and ankle surgery through their membership application. Full membership entitles to full membership benefits, as well as voting at the General Assembly and be elected to Council.

EFAS want to create a set up making it possible for one surgeon (visitor) to visit another surgeon (host). The visitor might want to gain experience in general foot and ankle surgery, if the visitor is young or less experienced. In other cases, the visitor might want to gain experience in highly specialized procedures in a high volume center with experienced surgeons. Each member should pay to its national society and a single payment will be made to EFAS by the National society. Each National Society is responsible for the verification of its members and trainees.

GloFAS is primarily designed for larger river catchments (over 10,000 km2), where the forecast skill is expected to be considerably higher. For small catchments, especially below 500 km2, the uncertainties get much larger due to the horizontal resolution constraints (~5 km in the river network and ~9 km in the meteorological forcing such as precipitation). This is reflected in our products/layers which do consider a minimum catchment size of 250 km2 or 500 km2, depending on the product. The countries eligible to be part of EFAS are as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The Map Viewer of the EFAS Information System (EFAS-IS) is the main source of information for users.

This dataset was produced by forcing the LISFLOOD hydrological model at a 0.1° (~11 km at the equator) resolution with downscaled runoff forecasts from the ECMWF 51-member ensemble seasonal forecasting system, SEAS5. The forecasts are initialised on the first of each month with a 24-hourly time step, and cover 123 or 215 days, depending on the date it was produced. This dataset provides a gridded modelled time series of river discharge, forced with medium- to sub-seasonal range meteorological reforecasts from GloFAS. This dataset was produced by forcing the LISFLOOD hydrological modelling chain with input from the ECMWF-ENS 11-member ensemble reforecasts. Reforecasts are forecasts run over past dates, and those presented here are used for providing a suitably long time period against which the skill of the 30-day real-time operational forecast can be assessed.

GloFAS provides a similar product portfolio as EFAS containing a wide range of early flood forecasting information to support stakeholders with flood risk management duties in arranging preparatory measures before an event strikes. The main difference to EFAS it the coarser spatial and temporal resolution due to the global setup. However, it is an asset to the flood risk management of large trans-national river basins, not least because it is free of charge and open to everyone who registers as a user. As for EFAS, GloFAS provided even estimates and maps of the potential socio-economic impact of flooding events.

To that end we organise the structure and content of the EFAS Instructional Courses, normally held three to four times a year at a variety of locations across Europe. We provide a core faculty for these courses but are also committed to working alongside local faculty colleagues. These shall be determined by the examination board in conjunction with the Honorary Treasurer. Candidates will be asked to sign a disclaimer before proceeding to the examination that they agree that the Examination Board has the final say regarding pass or fail.

Care should be taken when comparing model parameters with observations, because observations are often local to a particular point rather than averaged over a grid square area. Observations are also often taken in different units, such as mm/day, rather than the accumulated metres produced here.Runoff is a measure of the availability of water in the soil, and can, for example, be used as an indicator of drought or flood. The Global Flood Awareness Systems (GloFAS) in contrast to EFAS, is the operational global flood forecasting and monitoring system, being operational since 2018.

Model Output

The situation is particularly critical in many low- and middle-income countries, where access to hearing care is limited, and there is a severe shortage of trained audiology professionals. Through EFAS, we are dedicated to bridge this gap by advancing accessible, affordable and sustainable hearing care services for all. The unit for soil depth in this case (i.e. using LISFLOOD model for EFAS) should be millimetres (mm). You interpretation on how the depth is defined is correct; the file gives the depth of the bottom of each layer from the surface – the soil depth for layer 1 goes to 50 mm and the soil depth for layer 2 goes till 1400 mm, and so on. The purpose of the Education Committee is to provide high quality training to foot and ankle surgeons from across Europe and beyond.

EFA Annual Meeting and Calendar

A number of layers are publicly available, but the real-time forecasts can only be accessed by registered users. A complete logbook of surgical cases shall be required preferably electronically for ratification by the examination board before proceeding to the examination. In GloFAS, snow depth water equivalent in each grid box is calculated from three elevation-related bands to account for the difference in the melting rate with snow condition (see Auxiliary Data for more details). However, only the more directly usable composite snow map representing the total snow water equivalent for each grid box is made available.

In children, hearing loss can delay speech and language development, hinder academic performance and limit social interactions. In older adults, it may lead to social isolation, depression and cognitive decline. I would also like to acknowledge Prof. Georg Sprinzl and his outstanding team for the excellent coordination and organization of the 17th EFAS Congress in Vienna.
