For EFAS 4, LISFLOOD was upgraded to run sub-daily time steps (6-hourly), routing of flood waves in rivers was improved and the handling of model state files was refined. The upgrades allowed for better representation of hydrology in small to medium size catchments (Figure 3) and for the use of more realistic parameters in the calibration process. Our barrier can become impaired due to many intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Ie; harsh ingredient use over time, synthetics in skincare, poor water quality, pollution in the air and poor nutrition to name a few. When the skin’s membrane is impaired it no longer functions correctly leading to acceleration of the aging process and chronic skin conditions.
Traveling has broadened my perspective on our specialty, as we experience diverse medical approaches and rich cultural influences. This has shown me the different perspectives on the pathologies we handle daily. The energy and dynamism lie with the younger generation, and I hope this will encourage our younger colleagues to take full advantage of the fellowship opportunities that EFAS offers. All these efforts have solidified EFAS’s place on the map. I hope we can continue to build on the open and friendly atmosphere that is such a defining characteristic of EFAS. The GFM product is designed to deliver, in near real-time, critical information on ongoing floods events to users worldwide, including national authorities, emergency units, research centres, decision-makers and other stakeholders. GFM data can be accessed via the EFAS or GloFAS map viewer or using the GFM data portal.

Please be aware that as initially published in this topic, the cds-beta URL was planned to be discontinued and users were advised to update the URL in their .cdsapirc file by 20th October 2024. All CEMS datasets (e.g. GloFAS data) are available from the new CEMS Early Warning Data Store (CEMS EWDS).If you are retrieving data using the API, please check the URL in your .cdsapirc file points to the EWDS as shown here. In this example a ‘march’ hedge is to be claimed as an EFA hedge by both farmer A and farmer B. As the field boundary runs along the centre of the hedge, each can claim their respective half of the hedge. We would start measuring from the fence as the eligible land cover is within five metres of the arable land. In the example below, the farmer has chosen to include an area from the fence to the edge of the cropped arable land.

First, although each calibration station was calibrated separately, observational periods were generally different, making it impossible to define the same non-overlapping periods for all calibration points along the same river. Second, some calibration stations had only four years of available data, which is the shortest necessary duration to achieve a robust parameter optimisation, and no data were left for evaluation. This meant that no observational record was available to conduct an independent evaluation for those stations. As a compromise, the calibration was done using a sub-set of the observation record in most of the stations, but the hydrological model performance was evaluated on the full available discharge record (including the data used for the calibration).
LISFLOOD is a fully distributed hydrological model, which explicitly considers the spatial distribution of physical properties across catchments and provides estimates of river discharge on the entire geographical domain. Driven by meteorological forcing data (precipitation, temperature, potential evapotranspiration, and evaporation rates for open water and bare soil surfaces), LISFLOOD calculates a complete water balance for every grid cell within the EFAS domain, currently on a 5×5 km grid. Processes simulated include snowmelt, soil freezing, surface runoff, infiltration into the soil, preferential flow, redistribution of soil moisture within the soil profile, drainage of water to the groundwater system, groundwater storage, and groundwater base flow.
One main factor we look at closely when restoring one’s barrier is Fatty acids (lipids). Cell membranes are made up of fatty acids and therefore inadequate intake of EFAs results in abnormalities in the skin barrier. Some common topical symptoms of EFA deficiency include; flaky skin, brittle hair and nails, itchy reactive skin and psoriasis. EFACS E/8 provides all you require to run a field service department within your business, or a field service business in its own right. With a logic driven Assisted Engineer Scheduling board, a simple yet powerful mobile application for engineer’s use and the power and scope of EFACS E/8’s functionality utilised for the back-office, managing your reactive and planned workload has never been easier. As orthopedic surgeons and enthusiasts of foot and ankle care, we carry the responsibility of continuously expanding our knowledge and refining our skills to provide the highest level of care to our patients.

In addition, detailed forecasts are also available at stations where the national services are providing river discharge data. More than 900 registered users from 70 hydrological services and civil protection services in Europe are part of the EFAS network, whilst GloFAS has over 6000 registered users. The release of EFAS version 4 marks a milestone in EFAS development, delivering a first system calibrated with sub-daily data.
Gain access to online educational content exclusively available for EFAS members. Join a strong network of more than 6000 leading European and International Foot and Ankle surgeons. On this platform we will offer information about research fellowships, PhD programs, and potential research collaboration projects within EFAS member countries. We already recruited several institutions / sites that are willing to collaborate but mainly from Central and Southwest Europe, and we therefore specifically encourage Scandinavia and Eastern Europe countries but again all other countries to contribute.

Permanent crops are not included in the calculation of your arable area (see the Glossary for a definition of permanent crops). If all the five hectares of EFA is sited on permanent grassland this would now become arable and would be added to give your new total arable area, for the purpose of Greening only. We have also compiled a table in Annex A which you will find helpful in identifying your EFA requirements. If part of your holding is certified as organic or in organic conversion, the claimed areas that are not certified as organic or in organic conversion need to be considered for your EFA requirements.

In children, hearing loss can delay speech and language development, hinder academic performance and limit social interactions. In older adults, it may lead to social isolation, depression and cognitive decline. Through its Commissions, EFFAS contributes to supporting the development of financial servicesregulation by incorporating the practical knowledge of the professionals. EFFAS shares with the market the expert opinions and conclusions of the debate among qualified professionals within the members of the Federation and the results of surveys of common interest. The impact of this was that the discharge data was shifted in time by 6 hours.

EFAS Score
Knowledge Base and Practical Skills This is discussed and clarified in detail in the section on Curriculum. However, candidates will be expected to maintain a high standard of knowledge and practical skills in the field of Trauma and Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery. To run the parameter optimisation procedure, the LISFLOOD model was run at 6-hourly steps everywhere. However, the objective function (or goodness-of-fit measure) was calculated over a daily-aggregated time series for calibration points with daily observations, to allow a fair comparison between simulated and observed discharge data. This dual calibration strategy (both at 6‑hourly and daily time steps) was critical to guarantee the best possible geographical coverage as 6‑hourly river discharge data was not available everywhere.

We are also advancing our collaboration with various national associations to homologate their curricula. If you are an an individual with strong commitment to foot and ankle surgery residing and working outside of Europe, you may apply for this membership type. EFAS is the first operational European system monitoring and forecasting floods across Europe. For the calibration of EFAS 4, a dataset containing daily and 6‑hourly discharge data at river gauges for the period 1990–2017 was put together at ECMWF, based on data provided by EFAS-HYDRO.

- In addition to helping businesses with financial or legal issues The Equipment Finance Advice Service (EFAS) are here to assist the companies in the UK to find funding for their business.
- This means that court users can track cases filed in the civil jurisdiction only.
- GloFAS provides a similar product portfolio as EFAS containing a wide range of early flood forecasting information to support stakeholders with flood risk management duties in arranging preparatory measures before an event strikes.
- EFAs make up the building blocks of our skin’s surface layers and are crucial for healthy skin function, helping produce its natural oil barrier which we often unintentionally strip back by over exfoliating and over cleansing our skin.
- The approach is broad and includes all aspects of the subject from basic science to clinical management.
- Yet tragically, despite major advances in flood forecasting, hundreds of people every year still die in floods.
The pan-European setup of LISFLOOD uses a 5 km grid on a Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area projection. EFAS configuration maps were created by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission from various European databases with emphasis on having a homogeneous base all over Europe. For the calibration of EFAS 4, EFAS-METEO produced new datasets with 6-hourly gridded meteorological maps of precipitation and average surface air temperature using point observations for the period https://www.efas2023.org/forum/ 1990–2017 on the model’s 5 km spatial resolution. As part of the EFAS computational centre’s role, ECMWF is also responsible for developing and integrating into operation any improvement in the forecast model chain, and for developing, managing and running the EFAS web and data services.
Like most rainfall-runoff models, the equations of the LISFLOOD hydrological model include a range of parameters. Some of these can be determined from physical data, such as reservoir storage-elevation curves, or the drainage area of watersheds. Others vary from one area to another based on changes in climatology and physical factors, e.g. hydraulic soil properties. Some model parameters require calibration, which is generally obtained by tuning parameter values based on a comparison between simulated and observed discharge (Q) at river gauges. This tuning process generally aims to minimise errors in the volume and timing of simulated flow over a multi-year period. It couples state-of-the art weather forecasts with a hydrological model and with its continental scale set-up provides downstream countries with information on upstream river conditions.
It will ensure that if one task is completed, then the next step will be automatically done. More automation means more time for your employees to do other, more important tasks. For those staff whose roles don’t allow for direct access to a computer, EFACS E/8 provides mobile integration and support comes as standard, allowing your employees to access the systems they need to, via smartphones and tablets.
- EFAS produces 6-hourly flood forecasts (since 2020) and monthly seasonal streamflow outlooks (since 2016).
- In addition to forecasting where and when large riverine and flash floods will likely occur, the service also estimates and maps the potential socio-economic impact of those events.
- In this example a ‘march’ hedge is to be claimed as an EFA hedge by both farmer A and farmer B.
- This course covers the main topics and basic surgical techniques in foot and ankle such as Hallux Valgus surgery, Hallux rigidus surgery, Ankle instability, Metatarsalgia, Hindfoot arthrodesis.
- To that end we organise the structure and content of the EFAS Instructional Courses, normally held three to four times a year at a variety of locations across Europe.
- There is an emphasis on clinical examination of cases, small group discussions and learning surgical approaches in the cadaver lab.
- The fellows are, in a sense, ambassadors of our association and represent its future.
- In contrast, SWOT Analysis considers both internal and external factors, offering a more holistic view of an organization’s current situation and future prospects.
- For each sub-catchment domain, the parameters identified by the calibration procedure were used in all grid cells, while for areas not covered by the calibration stations, default parameters were used instead.
EFAS – Known Issues
The location and prospective congress president of the upcoming congresses is voted on by the General Assembly. In even years, the EFAS General Assembly is usually connected to a smaller, more focused meeting (usually hosted by the EFAS president). We have come a long way from where we started and today, EFAS represents 28 national societies and around surgeons in Europe. Once your registration documents are submitted, you will receive a confirmation email. Your application will then reviewed by the EFAS Council during the face-to-face meeting (usually taking place 3 times a year around January, June and at the time of the Annual Meeting).
The purpose of this curriculum is to provide a basis for the certification of young trainee trauma and orthopaedic surgeons specialising in foot and ankle management and surgery. CTEV from adult conditions but, again, there is a continuum in to adult life and a basic understanding is invaluable to the adult foot and ankle surgeon treating their subsequent effects. In addition, this shall promote educational and scientific research in basic science, paediatric, adult and traumatic foot and ankle surgery. By reinvestment the training of young surgeons interested in pursuing a career in trauma and orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery shall be facilitated. It covers Basic Science applied to the Ankle and Foot, Paediatric, Adult Orthopaedic and Traumatic Foot and Ankle Surgery. EFAS and GloFAS provide pan-European and global overview maps of flood probabilities up to 15 days in advance (30 days for GloFAS), seasonal streamflow outlooks up to several months ahead, flood impact assessment, as well as flash-flood risk (EFAS only).
In the example below an EFA margin has been claimed and is EFA eligible as it is adjacent to arable land. The EFA margin is between one and 20 metres wide and is claimed as PC as it is on permanent grassland. Diagram 2 below shows an EFA margin on permanent grassland (claimed as land use PC) within five metres of arable land.
Surgeons who complete this process will have a general understanding of the knowledge and surgical skills required but the standard shall be placed at specialist level providing complete confidence in our art and science for the patients that we treat. While both the EFAS Matrix and SWOT Analysis are valuable tools for strategic planning, they have distinct attributes that set them apart. The EFAS Matrix focuses primarily on external factors, providing insights into the broader business environment and helping organizations anticipate market changes. In contrast, SWOT Analysis considers both internal and external factors, offering a more holistic view of an organization’s current situation and future prospects. However, one limitation of SWOT Analysis is its reliance on subjective assessments. The factors identified in a SWOT Analysis are often based on the perceptions and judgments of individuals within the organization, which can introduce bias and inaccuracies.
If your application meets the membership criteria, the Council will suggest it for full ratification by the General Assembly during annual meeting. Benefit from reduced rates to all EFAS courses and events and meet fellow surgeons. If you are a CDS-beta API user, requests will be automatically redirected from the beta URL to the proper one until 20th October 2026.
- To supplement training in fellowships we introduced the annual Advanced Foot and Ankle Forum (AFAF) in 2016, a 3-day meeting specifically designed for UK Foot and Ankle Fellows, which has been a huge success and has triggered the creation of similar courses elsewhere.
- GFM data can be accessed via the EFAS or GloFAS map viewer or using the GFM data portal.
- EFAS 4.2 mainly concerns the addition of new hydrological river discharge stations in relevant layers, wtih additional improvements and general bug fixes.
- By upgrading the full EFAS medium-range modelling chain to a 6‑hourly timestep, all forcing fields, including observed meteorological data to simulate initial conditions, needed to also be produced at the finer time step.
- In 2018, development and validation of the EFAS Score was completed in 7 languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Swedish, Polish).
- It is both a profound responsibility and a great source of inspiration to lead such a distinguished community of professionals in the field of audiology.
- On this platform we will offer information about research fellowships, PhD programs, and potential research collaboration projects within EFAS member countries.
Ebru Zeren, Senior Audiologist, Audiology Department, Mid and South Essex University Hospitals GroupI had an incredible opportunity to attend the 17th Congress of the European Federation of Audiology Societies (EFAS), held in the heart of Vienna, Austria. The event took place at the stunning Palais Niederösterreich, a 16th-century Baroque palace rich in history and elegance. Situated between Vienna’s iconic St Stephen’s Cathedral and City Hall, the venue offered a unique blend of tradition and innovation, combining classical beauty with state-of-the-art facilities. The scientific content of the congress was equally outstanding.

Full membership entitles to full membership benefits, as well as voting at the General Assembly and be elected to Council. The Global Flood Awareness Systems (GloFAS) in contrast to EFAS, is the operational global flood forecasting and monitoring system, being operational since 2018. GloFAS provides a similar product portfolio as EFAS containing a wide range of early flood forecasting information to support stakeholders with flood risk management duties in arranging preparatory measures before an event strikes.
BOFAS News & Events
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Manuel Monteagudo and the entire Scientific Committee for their dedication, as well as our MCO team, whose efforts were essential to the success of our initiatives. From now on, there will be an annual congress, allowing for poster submissions and extended sessions with free papers. We are seeing a steady increase in submissions each year, confirming our scientific leadership. The Certification Program has also been updated, and starting next year, there will be a second path to certification. Thanks to the collaboration between the Specimen Lab Committee and the Educational Committee, candidates can now take the exam by completing five basic cadaver courses and a Basic Instructional Course over two years.
Through EFAS, we are dedicated to bridge this gap by advancing accessible, affordable and sustainable hearing care services for all. An issue has been identified with the EFAS sub-region extraction tool, whereby it serves data that is not correctly located on the river network. Any time-varying data (i.e. River discharge in the last 6 or 24 hours, snow depth water equivalent, and volumetric soil moisture) that has been downloaded using this tool from 2018 until now is not located at the correct position on the network when compared to the upstream area. NAMEThe European Federation of Audiology Societies, EFAS, is a non-profit organization, formed as a federation for national audiology societies in the European countries. Audiology is defined as the science of hearing and the alleviation of the effects of disorders of the auditory system.
If you are an an individual with strong commitment to foot and ankle surgery residing and working outside of Europe, you may apply for this membership type. Any time-varying data (i.e. River discharge in the last 6 or 24 hours, snow depth water equivalent, and volumetric soil moisture) that has been downloaded using this tool is not located at the correct position on the river network when compared to the upstream area data. Therefore, data previously downloaded using the sub-setting tool should be disregarded and users should download the dataset of interest again over the full EFAS domain. The Youth Committee is composed of 9 young foot and ankle surgeons from different countries, but participation is open to anyone interested in becoming more involved with EFAS. In this example the hedge is eligible to be claimed as an EFA hedge as the hedge is greater than 20 metres in length and it is within five metres of arable land.
Foot Print – BOFAS bulletin
However, there shall be no limit to the number of times that a Candidate may present for examination. Evidence of at least two international publications in appropriate Journals on Foot and Ankle Surgical topics shall be required. Preference shall be given to those publishing in the Journal of the European Foot and Ankle Society. EFAS currently has Basic Instructional Courses, Cadaver Courses, and an Annual Meeting or Advanced Instructional Course each year. Ideally the candidate shall have attended each of these courses but variations may be acceptable and the final decision about proceeding to sit the examination shall be determined by the Examination Board. It is complex and a reflection of our internal and external health whilst performing a multitude of functions, such as being a physical barrier for chemicals, UV radiation protection, insulating and synthesising Vitamin D.
